100th Day of School - sorting 100 pennies by date.
I couldn't resist posting two photos today. We had a beautiful, heavy, wet snow last night and the trees are covered. This view from my classroom window somehow makes this long winter bearable. Still wishing for spring!

This large ball will be auctioned off in March at an annual school fundraiser. So each child could have their own keepsake, we decorated softballs using a smaller version of each child's whooping crane drawing.
To launch our poetry unit, the children started work on their heart maps.
This is one of my favorite poems to share with my class on Valentine's Day. It's wonderful to see the kids' eyes get big, as smiles spread across their faces and they say, "Oh! I get it!" Cantaloupe always needs a little extra explanation.
Do you carrot all for me?
My heart beets for you.
With you turnip nose
And your radish face,
You are a peach.
If we cantaloupe,
Lettuce marry.
Weed make a swell pear.

Classroom traffic as children pass out their valentines.
Today on the way to check my mailbox, I passed by three first grade boys goofing around in the hall. When I asked where they were supposed to be, they told me they were getting a drink of water. "Please get a drink, then," I replied. These boys didn't know me, and as I turned to walk down the hall, one boy called, "I'm Cupid, ya know. And I have two arrows!" Happy Valentine's Day. I hope your day included a threat from Cupid too.
After working on their "Small Moments" stories for weeks, we had an Author's Celebration, complete with oreo cookies and milk. I grouped the children randomly by having them count off into fours. It wasn't until I looked at this photo that I realized this young fellow was the only boy in his group - and what a captive audience!
Valentine's Day bags in progess.
The Lion Dancers from China Town entertained us in the cafeteria with a traditional parade and drumming. Our principal fed the lion a head of cabbage, which was quickly shredded and thrown into the crowd of laughing children for prosperity. Gung Hay Fat Choy!
