Our class has finished reading Roald Dahl's The BFG as a read aloud and are preparing to see this play at the Merle Reskin Theatre later this week. Our Morning Meeting today focused on unlikely friendships, such as the one Sophie has with the Big Friendly Giant. Mrs. Maxey introduced the children to another unlikely pair, Owen the baby hippo and Mzee the 130 year old tortoise. Here's the original story from NPR. Their amazing, true story has also been captured in two wonderful picture books, Owen and Mzee: The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship and Owen and Mzee: The Language of Friendship. Owen and Mzee's story continues at the Haller Park wild animal sanctuary in Kenya. Owen is getting acquainted with a new friend and companion, Cleo the hippo. I was delighted to find the Owen and Mzee Weblog that documents their daily adventures.
