In recent years, Douglas Florian has become one of my favorite children's poets. The other day, one of my students brought his book, on the wing, to me and said, "Look, Ms. Harrison! Here's a poem about a whooping crane." She was so excited to have made this discovery before I had. It's a great addition to our migration unit.
The Whooping Crane
The whooping crane,
The whooping crane,
So big it's practically a plane.
A splendid sight
Up in the air-
It's lithe and light
But rather rare.
It feeds in marshes-
See it stoop-
This brillaint bird
That loves to whoop.
